StrongVPN Router Not Connecting - Troubleshooting Tips and Tricks

StrongVPN Setup Help:

  • Tip: Make sure you do not have any StrongVPN application or client software running on a device in your network when you are trying to connect to StrongVPN on your router. A double VPN connection may cause loss of Internet connectivity.
  • Troubleshooting: If you are properly connected to VPN but still can not access certain sites or services you desire then we recommend contacting StrongVPN to see if they have a specific server address to input that will better suit your needs.
  • Tip: StrongVPN hosts their own DNS servers, which you can use to make sure all VPN traffic is directed through StrongVPN to allow access to all web content as needed. Check out our DNS Help Center section for more info on inputting DNS servers in your DD-WRT or Tomato router.
    • DNS Server #1: 216.131.95.20
    • DNS Server #2: 216.131.94.5
  • Tip: A single StrongVPN account allows for 1 connection to their service. Your StrongVPN FlashRouter and all the devices connected to it count as a single connection, meaning you can connect as many devices as the FlashRouter will allow with no extra VPN configuration required. If you experience issues initially connecting to VPN on your router, then make sure you are not already connected to StrongVPN on another device.
  • Troubleshooting: In DD-WRT if you see Connection Success on the Status > OpenVPN page, but can't browse the Internet, then change settings on the Setup > Basic Setup page.
    • Check the box Use DNSMasq for DHCP
    • Check the box Use DNSMasq for DNS
    • Check the box DHCP Authoritative
    • Click Apply Settings.
    • Wait a moment for the settings to apply, check for connection success again, and then try and browse the Internet through VPN.
  • Troubleshooting: If the command line does not work, this may be due to settings that have been input into the router previously. We recommend the following steps if the installer fails.
    • Reset your router to default DD-WRT or Tomato settings.
    • Change your router IP address to avoid a network conflict: DD-WRT/Tomato
    • Do not enter any DNS settings at this time, the installer will automatically set you up with StrongVPN's DNS servers.
    • Now reboot your router, access the router at the IP address you set after the reboot is complete, and go through the command line installation process again.
  • Tip: Command line installers should work on all routers shipped from FlashRouters after 2016. If your firmware build is from before 2016 then contact our support team for an updated build recommendation.
