Setting up DNS & SmartDNS

Make sure you are connected via wired or wireless to your router network. Access your router settings in any browser.

Changing DD-WRT DNS Settings:

Navigate to the Setup > Basic Setup tab. Scroll down the page and you will see the Network Address Server Settings area. In this area there are three fields titled Static DNS 1, Static DNS 2, & Static DNS 3.

Enter your preferred DNS servers then scroll down and Click "Apply Settings" to lock in any changes. Do not change any other DNS settings unless specifically instructed.

Changing Tomato DNS Settings:

Navigate to the Basic > Network area and you will see the Static DNS area with three fields for entering your own DNS servers.

Enter your preferred DNS servers then scroll down and Click Save to lock in any changes. Do not change any other DNS settings unless specifically instructed.

Why are DNS servers important? - How to prevent DNS leaks:

Using your own Static DNS servers instead of automatically using your ISP's DNS servers to resolve web pages is recommended as a first level of increased web security. It also adds protection by automatically filtering many malicious websites.

FlashRouters ships out all units with some combination of Google and/or OpenDNS servers as trusted name servers. This helps avoid DNS leaks when connected through a VPN service.

Trusted DNS Servers:

GoogleDNS:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

OpenDNS:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Level 3 DNS:
209.244.0.3
209.244.0.4
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4

Family Safe Networking:

You can also use a free service like OpenDNS Family Shield if you would like to block access to adult content on your entire network.

Family Shield Servers:
208.67.222.123
208.67.220.123

SmartDNS Setup for DD-WRT and Tomato Routers:

SmartDNS users can also enter their unique DNS server addresses that have been provided by their subscription service in these fields. Note that in some cases you may be required to make other minor settings changes in your router configuration as instructed by your service provider.

Once you have entered SmartDNS servers in the FlashRouter make sure your WAN IP address is cleared for use with the service.  You can do this by accessing your account on the provider's website and activating for your address.

Remember that you can't use a VPN service and SmartDNS at the same time. Make sure you have any VPN connections disabled when using SmartDNS.
