Alternate ExpressVPN PPTP Setup Guide for DD-WRT & Tomato

  • Normally we recommend using the OpenVPN protocol for ExpressVPN router connections, however if you are experiencing an issue with OpenVPN, such as slow speeds, then a PPTP connection may work faster in some cases.
  • Make sure you are not running Expressvpn OpenVPN and PPTP connection protocols at the same time!
  • First login to the ExpressVPN website to retrieve your special PPTP specific ExpressVPN username and password.
    • You will find this information by clicking Setup ExpressVPN and then click Manual Config.
    • Select PPTP & L2TP-IPSec and your PPTP username and password will be displayed.
    • You will also see the PPTP specific server addresses below.
  • It is very difficult to troubleshoot any difficulties with PPTP connections due to lack of proper connection logging. If you have trouble establishing a PPTP connection we recommend sticking with the OpenVPN setup option.
  • Due to compatibility issues, we do not support ExpressVPN PPTP connections on Tomato firmware.

  2. In the top right corner of your router settings you will notice that you have been assigned a new WAN IP address.

  1. On the Setup > Basic Tab in the WAN Connection Type area change your Connection Type back to Automatic Configuration - DHCP then click Apply Settings and Reboot Router.
  2. The ExpressVPN PPTP settings will stay in the router if you would like to turn the connection back on.
