Tomato Wireless Recommended Settings

These are only wireless recommendations and optimal settings may change depending on external factors such as home size, interfering networks, wall thickness, and the wireless devices you are connecting in the network.

View our Wireless Troubleshooting pages if you are not seeing a FlashRouter wireless network or if you have trouble getting a good wireless signal.

Navigate to the Basic > Network area to view or change your wireless network names.

Single Band 2.4 GHz - Wireless-N

  • Enable Wireless: Checked. Uncheck this box to turn wireless 2.4 GHz broadcast on or off.
  • Wireless Mode: Access Point. This setting should only be changed in wireless extender setups.
  • Wireless Network Mode: Auto. N-Only will isolate the 2.4 GHz broadcast and may provide faster wireless speeds, but for legacy devices like printers, old gaming systems, or old computers you should set this to Auto.
  • SSID: FlashRouter24. Change the name of your 2.4 GHz wireless network here.
  • Broadcast: Checked. Unchecking the box will hide the wireless SSID and force you to manually join the network.
  • Channel: Auto. By setting the channel to Auto, the router should scan for local wireless interference from any other wireless devices in range and then choose the least crowded channel for optimal speeds. You may use Scan button to the right of this setting to analyze local networks and help choose the least used channel to then manually set in this field.

  • Channel Width: 20 MHz. The 40 MHz option is available on the 2.4 GHz network and may offer slightly higher speeds in certain cases, but we do not recommended using this setting as it can issues with wireless connections on many legacy devices.
  • Security/Encryption: WPA2 Personal / AES
  • Shared Key: Wireless#[last 5 digits of your FlashRouter Order #]
    • e.g. Wireless#98765 for Order #100098765
    • You can change your wireless password here. It must be at least 8 characters long.

Important: You must use the WPA 2 Personal / AES security settings for optimized wireless connections.

Click Save to lock in any changes you make. You may need to rejoin the wireless network after certain changes.

Dual Band 5 GHz - Wireless-A (No AC)

  • Follow the 2.4 GHz band instructions above to make sure each band is correctly configured.

  • Enable Wireless: Checked. Uncheck this box to turn wireless 5 GHz broadcast on or off.
  • Wireless Mode: Access Point. This setting should only be changed in wireless extender setups.
  • Wireless Network Mode: N-Only, A-Only, or Auto. N-Only and A-Only will isolate the 5 GHz broadcast and may provide faster wireless speeds, but for the broadest connection compatibility you should set this to Auto.
  • SSID: FlashRouter50. Change the name of your 5 GHz wireless network here. Use a different SSID than your 2.4 GHz network.
  • Channel Width: 40 MHz. Using the 40 MHz width on the 5 GHz network will allow for better segmentation from the 2.4 GHz network and help prevent interference between your two wireless network broadcasts.

Dual Band 5 GHz Wireless-AC

  • Follow the 2.4 GHz band instructions above to make sure each band is correctly configured.
  • If you are using a Tri-Band router use this and the additional 5GHz instructions below.

  • Enable Wireless: Checked. Uncheck this box to turn wireless 5 GHz broadcast on or off.
  • Wireless Mode: Access Point. This setting should only be changed in wireless extender setups.
  • Wireless Network Mode: Auto. Use the Auto mode to take advantage of the Wireless AC frequency broadcast. If you do not have AC devices, then you can set N-Only or A-Only to isolate the 5 GHz broadcast to one mode.
  • SSID: FlashRouter50. Change the name of your 5 GHz wireless network here. Use a different SSID than your 2.4 GHz network.
  • Channel Width: 80 MHz. Use the 80 MHz
  • Control Sideband: Upper. This sideband usually provides the best overall speeds, but if you feel you are not getting desired speeds, you may try the Lower setting.

Tri Band 5 GHz Wireless-AC

  • Follow the Single Band 2.4 GHz and Dual Band 5GHz Wireless-AC instructions above to make sure each band is correctly configured.
  • You may notice the ordering of these three bands differs across router models.

  • SSID: FlashRouter80. Change the name of your 5 GHz wireless network here. Use a different SSID than your 2.4 GHz network.
  • Channel Width: 80 MHz. Use the 80 MHz width on the 5 GHz network to allow for wireless-AC signal speeds; this enables upper broadcast channels.
  • Control Sideband: Upper. This sideband usually provides the best overall speeds, but if you feel you are not getting appropriate throughput, you may try the Lower setting.
