- Normally we recommend using the OpenVPN protocol for PIA router connections, however if you are experiencing an issue with OpenVPN, such as slow speeds, then a PPTP connection may work faster in some cases.
- Make sure you are not running PIA OpenVPN and PPTP connection protocols at the same time!
- First log into the PIA website to retrieve your special PPTP specific PIA username and password from your account area.
- It is very difficult to troubleshoot any difficulties with PPTP connections due to lack of proper connection logging. If you have trouble establishing a PPTP connection we recommend sticking with the OpenVPN setup option.
- Scroll down for PIA PPTP Tomato firmware settings.
Entering PIA PPTP settings in DD-WRT:
In your DD-WRT FlashRouter settings click on the Setup > Basic Setup tab. Leave all settings not mentioned below as their default setting.
In the WAN Connection Type section:

How can I tell if my PPTP PIA DD-WRT VPN connection is active?
- In the Status > WAN tab the Connection Type should be PPTP and Login Status should be Connected.
- In the top right corner of your router settings you will notice that you have been assigned a new WAN IP address.
- Use the PIA IP address lookup tool to verify your new IP address.
How do I turn off my PIA DD-WRT PPTP connection:
- On the Setup > Basic Tab in the WAN Connection Type area change your Connection Type back to Automatic Configuration - DHCP then click Apply Settings and Reboot Router.
- The PIA PPTP settings will stay in the router if you would like to turn the connection back on.

How can I tell if my PPTP Tomato PIA VPN connection is active?
- In the Advanced > Routing area you will see ppp0 appear in your routing table list of connections.
- On the Status > Overview page you will see in your WAN section that Connection Type is set to PPTP with a PIA PPTP WAN IP address as your Gateway.
- Use the PIA IP address lookup tool to verify your new IP address.
How do I turn off my PIA Tomato PPTP connection:
- On the Basic > Network page in the WAN/Internet area change your Type back to DHCP then click Save below and Reboot Router.
- The PIA PPTP settings will stay in the router if you would like to turn the connection back on.
