How can I speed up my ExpressVPN connection?:
Encrypting your entire network through ExpressVPN requires considerable processing power and bandwidth. This is why you may notice speeds that are lower than your normal ISP speeds. Although the connection may be a little slower you should be comforted in knowing it is also fully encrypted through a secure VPN connection. There are still several ways that you may be able to improve slow ExpressVPN connection speeds on your router.
- Try out alternate server locations listed on our setup guides or in the ExpressVPN .ovpn you downloaded for configuration. Typically the server location that is closest to your actual location will work best for you.
- For users wanting to connect to USA from abroad we strongly recommend servers located on the US coast nearest to you.
- For DD-WRT users try using our alternate PPTP connection guide for ExpressVPN. PPTP connections require less processing power than OpenVPN, which may allow for faster connection speeds. Although it is not as secure as OpenVPN you still get an anonymous IP address in the country of your choosing. Make sure you do not have an OpenVPN connection running at the same time as a PPTP connection.
- If speed and access to content is of greater concern to you than encryption and security ExpressVPN offers MediaStreamer SmartDNS servers that can be used with each subscription instead of VPN. Review our Setting up DNS page for where to enter the settings in your FlashRouter.
