Why is my 2.4GHz or 5GHz wireless network not appearing?

The 2.4GHz network and 5GHz networks are inherently different from one another and each has its advantages.

The 2.4GHz wireless will be compatible with all of your wireless devices and will offer greater range in your location. It is ideal for devices that will be moving around require further range.

The 5GHz network may not be compatible with older devices, however almost all newer devices should be compatible. This band operates on higher frequency channels which offer better speeds than the 2.4GHz network, but less range. It is ideal for devices that do not move around much and remain quite close to the FlashRouter.

DD-WRT:

  • If you know for a fact that your devices are 5GHz compatible and is still not showing up on those devices we recommend that you proceed to the Wireless > Basic Settings page in your firmware and try selecting a specific Wireless Channel in the 5GHz wireless settings.
  • Make sure that you do not have the Wireless Mode set to disabled.
  • You can also try selecting a different Wireless Network Mode in this same area.
  • Make sure that Wireless SSID Broadcast is not disabled.
  • If you are using the TP-Link Archer C7 you should select Wireless Channel: 36 - 5180 MHz.

Tomato:

  • If you know for a fact that your devices are 5GHz compatible and is still not showing up on those devices we recommend that you proceed to the Basic > Network page in your firmware and try selecting a specific Wireless Channel in the 5GHz wireless settings.
  • Make sure you have the Enable Wireless box checked.
  • You can also try selecting a different Wireless Network Mode in this same area.
  • Make sure that the SSID Broadcast box is checked.
  • If you are using the Asus RT-AC56U flashed with Tomato firmware go to the Advanced > Wireless page and set the Country / Region to your actual location (note: selecting this location has nothing to do with your VPN connection) for both wireless bands.
